Do I need extra calcium while I am pregnant?
No, your body does not require any additional calcium if you are pregnant (i.e. you should still try to get 700mg per day). This doesn’t mean calcium is not important at this time though. In fact, calcium is really important during pregnancy as it’s needed for your unborn baby’s bones, as well as giving you other essential nutrients. Although during pregnancy your calcium requirements do not increase, if you are breastfeeding you will need extra calcium (an additional 500mg), as calcium will be present in breast milk in large amounts.
