Athletes go the distance at ‘Milk It’ Championships

Hundreds of budding athletes met over the weekend to compete in the Dairy Council for Northern Ireland’s ‘Milk It’ Athletics Championship.

The annual event organised by the Ulster Secondary Schools’ Athletics Association took place over two days at the Antrim Forum Athletics Stadium. Competitors through senior, intermediate, junior and minor levels tested their athletic skills across the range of track and field disciplines.

The May Championships have formed an integral part of the post primary schools’ athletics calendar for many years, and have been the launching pad for a number of Northern Ireland athletes who have gone on to compete at international level.

Speaking at the Antrim Forum, Dr Mike Johnston, Chief Executive of the Dairy Council for Northern Ireland, said:

“Congratulations to all of the athletes who competed in this year’s ‘Milk It’ Athletics Championships, through the district qualifiers and this weekend at the finals. The sponsorship naturally complements the range of activities we currently deliver in post primary schools across Northern Ireland and provides us with the opportunity to associate milk with such a positive sporting environment. We are committed to highlighting the importance of milk as part of an active lifestyle.”

Dr Johnston added:

“Milk is a natural source of protein which is necessary for normal muscle growth and function, and as a source of fluid can be an excellent way of hydrating following exercise.”
