An Enniskillen student aged 12 years old has been announced as the Dairy Council for Northern Ireland’s Young Cook of the Year 2011.
Grace Kettyle, a budding chef from Collegiate Grammar School triumphed over her 12 competitors in a ‘Masterchef’ style cook off at Grosvenor Grammar School.
Taking inspiration from the theme of this year’s competition, Grace used a variety of locally sourced and nutritious dairy products to produce a delicious two course meal for a family of four to spoil her mum on Mother’s Day. Demonstrating her nutritional knowledge and skills in the kitchen, Grace was judged on her use of dairy products including milk, cheese, yoghurt, eggs, buttermilk and half–fat butter.
Dr Mike Johnston, Chief Executive of the Dairy Council for Northern Ireland, said:
“The standard of entries to this year’s Young Cook of the Year competition was extremely high and it was great to see a wide variety of students demonstrating their knowledge of using fresh and locally sourced dairy products to create delicious, healthy and nutritious meals.
Connor Phillips, Cool FM DJ presented Grace with her trophy, saying:
“As well as providing me with some necessary culinary tips, I would like to congratulate Grace who is a very deserving winner – her food was delicious! I’m sure that we’ve seen the next Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson!”.
Also announced at the final were top students in each category. Morag Stewart from Sullivan Upper School in Holywood was the Key Stage 4 winner, Grace Kettyle from Collegiate Grammar School in Enniskillen was announced as the Key Stage 3 winner and in the Special Education category, the winner was Andrew Doherty from Cross and Passion College in Ballycastle.
The annual Dairy Council Young Cook of the Year competition was developed in consultation with the Education and Library Boards and the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment in Northern Ireland (CCEA). The competition supports the Home Economics curriculum at Key Stage 3 and CCEA GCSE Home Economics.
