School Milk Scheme

Many schools in Northern Ireland provide milk through the EU School Milk scheme. In fact, recent statistics show that 75% of primary schools make milk available for their pupils. The programme encourages children to consume dairy products as part of a balanced diet, and plays an important educational role by encouraging the adoption healthy eating patterns at an early age.
Through the scheme, the European Union provides subsidies to schools, which are supplemented by funds from the UK government, so that milk and milk products can be provided to primary school children at a reduced cost.
At present around 60% of all primary school pupils in Northern Ireland take milk on a regular basis through the EU School Milk Scheme. Parents make a contribution towards the cost; this varies between each Education and Library Board ,but on average, a third pint bottle of 189 ml carton of milk costs less than 13p a day...fantastic value when you consider the benefits it can provide...
